Family Portraits – How to Take Great Portraits Outdoors

Why should you take family portraits outdoors? Besides the potential for beautiful or fun backgrounds, photographing outside provides the opportunity to use natural lighting. If you are a professional photographer or serious enthusiast then you know that the external flash, studio lights and reflectors work to mimic the beauty of natural light.

If you are new to photography and have a digital compact and built in flash, then taking your family portraits outdoors is the best way to get professional quality portraits that you’ll want to proudly frame in your home.

The Best Natural Lighting for Taking Family Portraits Outdoors

Not all outdoors lighting is ideal. The worst time of day to take family portraits outdoors is mid-day. The best times of day are what many photographers refer to as the “Golden Hours” the hour before sunset and after dawn when the light is softest and the shadows least harsh. The closer to these times you can gather the family for their portrait, the better.

Another good option is to wait for a cloudy day when there is bright overcast light. This provides enough bright light and is the kind of softness professional photographers spend money on soft boxes to get. If the timing doesn’t work out for any of the above, find shade that isn’t too dark.

Outdoor Portrait Settings

The obvious choice and perhaps the perfect choice is the family’s backyard. Or you could take a cue from high school senior photography and take your outdoors family portrait at a place the family enjoys such as a park. If you go away from home, look for locations and times of the day when the area is the least crowded.

You should also consider using a family activity or a hobby as a potential setting. If the entire family is into horses, a pretty pasture with horses nibbling on the grass with the family posed on and in front of a nice white fence could work quite well. If the family sails, consider the boat’s deck.

Speaking of boats, a word of caution: if you decide to take any family portraits outdoors at places such as the sea, beach or snow, here are some things that can help: Select the beach mode on a digital compact, or if you use a DSLR or SLR, use a polarizing filter. This will help with the glare. Set the flash to “on” instead of “automatic” to help minimize shadows on the family. Don’t position the family where they will be facing the sun otherwise they’ll be squinting.

As with any picture, be sure to hide or remove clutter in the background. Do you want to use the natural outdoor lighting but want a plain background? Tack a piece of fabric to a fence. Check the lawn for sprinklers and behind the family for things that might be distracting, like a lamp post.

If you want to diminish the overall background, use the Portrait mode or set your Aperture Priority for a smaller depth of field.

On the other hand, you may want to have outdoor features as part of the picture by posing the family in front of a beautiful tree. Just be sure to compose the shot with the focus on the family.

Whether you are taking family portraits outdoors for others or your own family, use these portrait tips and you’ll be sure to take a portrait that will be proudly framed on the family wall.

10 Tips for a Perfect Birthday Speech

Birthday celebrations often call for a birthday speech. It’s a moment when everyone around expects to hear a nice and well crafted speech. Often small mistakes ruin not only the speech but also the mood of the celebration.

Here are some things to keep in mind when you are about to deliver your birthday speech.

1. Your birthday speech should be clear, upbeat, optimistic and easily understandable by everyone around.

2. Don’t mention age of the celebrant in your birthday speech unless it’s a special milestone birthday like 21st or 50th. Some people like to celebrate every birthday but don’t like to disclose their real age.

3. Don’t say something that might embarrass the celebrant or the guests. The celebrant might not like the guests to know that he/ she has a snoring or a drinking problem. So be careful not to raise such issues in your speech.

4. Never tell a harsh and rude story of the celebrant. Birthdays are usually family events and the senior family members might not like whatever about the birthday boy or girl.

5. Refrain yourself from talking about sad moments or events. Birthdays are special celebrations of fun and joy and the mention of a sad moment will most likely kill the merriment. However there may be exceptions, but unless you are totally sure it’s always better to avoid anything that might awaken sad memories.

6. Don’t try to be too funny. Comedians are professionally skilled persons possessing excellent training and timing. Most of us are unable to write and deliver witty speeches. It’s always better to be light-hearted and genuine rather than trying to be a jester and spoil the fun.

7. Make sure that your birthday speech does not offend anyone. Some things might seem obvious like friends flocking in only for a free drink or something but you should never ever insult any of the guests.

8. Never talk about deceased family members or friends unless the guest of honor does so or it is appropriate to say that the departed is surely there in spirit. Sometimes the bereavement is still fresh and it is always better to avoid saying such things than mentioning it and upsetting everyone at the party.

9. Never call the celebrant by his/ her pet name. A husband might not like all his office colleagues to know what he calls his wife by. Or a teenager might be thoroughly embarrassed to be called a mama’s boy. It’s okay of course to call him Jeff instead of Jefferson.

10. Avoid writing reams. The birthday guests are there to party, not to listen to you half-an-hour long speech. It would bore the hell out of them. A three to five minute speech is good enough.
